Newsletter - May 2007 WELCOME TO ESOF2008 FIRST NEWSLETTER EuroScience Open Forums provide the only Europe-wide opportunity for everyone working in or with an interested in research to meet and debate the direction that European research is taking or the issues that research is raising. WHAT IS ESOF? - http://www.esof2008.org EuroScience Open Forum 2008 in Barcelona is organised by Euroscience and hosted by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation/ Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI). ESOF2008 will be the third Open Forum. ESOFs are held every second year, hosted by major science cities in Europe - Stockholm in 2004 and Munich in 2006. The Forums are interdisciplinary meetings of scientists, young researchers, politicians, policy-makers, innovators, business people, media and communicators. ESOF typically features over 70 scientific sessions in topics ranging from nanosciences to ethics, natural disasters to tissue engineering, and international security to the human mind. CALL FOR PROPOSALS - ANSWER THE CALL BEFORE THE 30th OF JUNE! You are invited to submit proposals to present leading scientific and technology issues and/or to organise dynamic public outreach activities. The Call for Proposals to submit ideas for participation in the Scientific Programme is open to researchers from all disciplines, public and private institutions, journalists and communicators, policy-makers, and businesses. The core of this programme will consist of scientific sessions mainly organised in ten Scientific Themes. In addition to their scientific content, these sessions will stimulate debate on how science, technology and the humanities impact on society and the economy. A Career Programme in partnership with Nature Jobs will present opportunities open to young and mid-career researchers. Proposals that bring together diverse members of Europe's science community are particularly encouraged. The ESOF2008 Outreach Activities Programme is also open for proposals that will engage the imagination of citizens through shows, displays and presentations that bring science to life in the fields of culture, sports and leisure. An Exhibition will give commercial, scientific and academic partners the chance to present themselves and their work to a large public. The ten themes are:
